Rider Sportswear 2009 VSCC State Final Review
|
Hundreds of students contest the State Final of the Rider Sportswear 2009 Victorian Schools Cycling Championships in Lygon St, Melbourne. On Saturday 19 October, Victoria's best young cyclists were on show with over 360 school students from over 150 schools contesting the State Final of the Rider Sportswear 2009 Victorian Schools Cycling Championships (VSCC09). The final was held in Lygon St, Melbourne, with students completing Stage 6 of the 2009 Jayco Herald Sun Tour just hours before their professional counterparts. Students qualified through one of the nine VSCC09 zone finals held across Victoria between August and October where they competed in Racing (Cycling licence holders) and Novice (Non-licenced) categories. The top three in each category at each zone final qualified for the State Final, with the zone final winner was presented with an official winners jersey. During Saturday's state final, there were many high calibre contests with 2008/09 Victorian Track Cyclist of the Year Shannon McCurley's sprint finish over 2009 junior road world championship representative Kendelle Hodges in the W19 Racing event, certainly one of the highlights. The title is McCurley's fourth consecutive at the championships. Other racing highlights included dual 2009 Australian junior track champion Imogen Jelbart's victory in the W17 racing, Eric Sheppard's solid performance in a strong M19 category and Robert Oakenfull overcoming Liam Hood in the M15 event. In the Novice events, St Margret's & Berwick Grammar School picked up three gold medals to Rachel Hore (W19) and sisters Sophie (W15) and Alexandra Weston (W17). Peter Davine (M13) and Ryan Green (M19) collected their second straight title. VSCC09 Event Coordinator Luke Mason was impressed with the standard of racing and sportsmanship from all competitors. "This event unearths new Victorian cycling talent each year and provides them with an opportunity to race on a grand scale such as the Herald Sun Tour," Mason said. "It (VSCC) just keeps getting bigger and better every year, and with the UCI Road World Championships in Melbourne next year, the 2010 championships promise to be the best yet." CycleSport Victoria would like to thank all clubs and towns which hosted a zone final of VSCC09 and to the many volunteers at each zone final and the state final. A special thanks to official sponsor Rider Sportswear who have strongly supported this event for the past three years. Rider provided all zone final and state champions jerseys and many schools with official team jerseys. Also, thank you to the Jayco Herald Sun Tour organisers for the use of infrastructure at the state final. 2009 Victorian Schools Cycling Championships State Champions
