Marwood claims 50km Points Classic

Amy McCann, Friday, 13 February 2009

CCCC 50km Points Classic, Thursday February 12, 2009.

Bendigo Cyclist Kyle Marwood (Decked Out Coaching) was unstoppable at the Packer Park velodrome tonight, lapping the field four times and winning 12 of the 20 sprints in CCCC’s 50km Points Score Classic. Marwood finished the 2008 edition in 5th place after dropping two laps to runaway winner James Langedyk (Geelong CC), but in 2009 it was his turn to dish out the pain.

Raced over 135 laps against a stiff breeze, it promised to be a night for ‘the hard riders’, and Marwood and Mark O’Brien (Drapac Porsche) proved to be the hardest in a quality field that included four riders from the Malaysian track squad as well as riders from New Zealand, New South Wales and Tasmania. Both joined an early attack, which included Adrian Hanson (Ventou), Tom Leaper, Hamish Taylor (Richmond Cyclery) and Brent Nelson, and quickly had the bunch in difficulty as they powered to the first of their four laps on the bunch. Taylor won the first sprint, and O’Brien the second, but Marwood hit the lead after winning the third sprint and never relinquished it.

Marwood and O’Brien took their second laps after bridging across to a solo move by Paul Mason (CCCC Elite), and their third with Hanson. Taylor tagged along for the pair’s final lap, and collected enough points during the break to move ahead of Hanson in the distant battle for third place.

O’Brien, best known as a talented road rider, faced a virtually insurmountable points deficit to the leader with six sprints remaining, and tried to break clear of Marwood many times, but on each occasion the powerful sprinter was up to the challenge. Marwood showed his total dominance in the closing stages when he counter attacked one of O’Brien’s moves to reach the bunch a lap before O’Brien and Taylor could made contact.

The final sprint saw the 12 survivors from the 24 starters together in one group for one of few times on the tough night, with Hanson taking the traditional double points sprint (and the $50 prize) to finish in third place. The 50 kilometres were covered in 1.06.47.
