115th Austral Wheelrace - About
|
The Austral Wheelrace is held annually in Melbourne, Australia and is generally regarded as Australia’s greatest and most prestigious track cycling event.
It is also the oldest track bicycle race in the world still existing, with the event stretching back to 1887 where it was held for the first time on the Melbourne Cricket Ground over 3 miles (4800m), with first prize of a grand piano or a cabinet filled with silverware.
The Austral Wheelrace final will be the feature race of the evening, but many other high class events such as the Women's Austral and Junior Austral will also feature.
Over the course of 114 editions of the Austral, many great cyclists have taken the honours including Sid Patterson (1962 & 1964), Danny Clark (1977, 1986 & 1990), Stephen Pate (1988, 1991, 1993 & 1999) and Shane Perkins (2009).
The 115th edition promises to be a truly world class event!
