Leading Rider

Cycling Victoria's Leading Rider program provides training to individuals keen to effectively lead group rides. Training is designed to teach you the skills and knowledge required to manage cycling groups confidently and improve the safety of the riding experience for both you and the ride participants.

The course covers the following topics:

  • Your role as a Leading Rider
  • Getting to know your riders
  • Communication and leadership skills
  • Bunch and rider safety
  • Bunch formations (including practical demonstrations)

Leading Rider is aimed at improving levels of safety for cyclists on our roads. While many group rides take place on a regular basis, they are not necessarily led by experienced or qualified cyclists. Leading Rider training is available to people from all walks of life: avid cyclists, club riders, social riders, parents, students, teachers, and anyone with a passion for safe cycling.

People participating in rides led by a Leading Rider will benefit by:

  • Participating in welcoming and regular social activity
  • Having a qualified leader to provide advice on riding techniques and bike safety
  • An increase in bike handling ability
  • More knowledge of safe riding practices
  • A regular group to ride with
  • Option to join a local cycling club or Bicycle User Group (BUG) and make cycling a life-long habit

Ride insurance

Cycling is an activity that carries genuine risk and it is therefore important to ensure that all riders have insurance cover during organised bunch rides. Leading Riders have the option to provide temporary insurance cover to new or casual riders.

Steps to provide insurance for your riders:

Option 1 - Membership

The insurance cover for Cycling Victoria members will cover you 24/7 on the bike and includes personal accident, public liability & loss of income benefits. Recreational membership start at $88 annually. Go to the Cycling Australia membership page to find out more.

Option 2 - Temporary Ride Insurance

Cycling Victoria (CV) is a licensed provider of AustCycle training. Accredited Leading Riders can provide temporary insurance for new riders through Cycling Victoria's AustCycle insurance. The leader must have a minimum AustCycle Skills Coach qualification and be a fully accredited Leading Rider. You can purchase insurance cover for a specified amount of time, meaning Cycling Victoria will report you as an active cycling coach. The fee you pay will go towards our insurance payment to Cycling Australia.

In order to cover your rides, follow the steps below:

  1. Click here to purchase ride insurance for either 1 month ($30), 3 months ($80) or 6 months ($150)
  2. Download the Leading Rider registration form (or request a copy from
  3. Have any new (non-member) riders complete the form before their first ride. They only need to complete it once.
  4. Send a copy of each form to CV (scan and email to, or post to C/- Riding & People Team, Cycling Victoria, PO Box 180, Fairfield, VIC).
  5. Encourage riders to get a cycling membership through CV!
