Riders head off under the UCI archThe picturesque and challenging 80km course commenced on the start line of the UCI Women’s World Cup, and cyclists were able to ride part of the course, before heading to the areas of Freshwater Creek, Bellbrae, Jan Juc, Torquay and Breamlea and riders were greeted with perfect weather conditions upon arrival at the Geelong foreshore.

The Mayor takes the Challenge

City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr Bruce Harwood will be amongst the riders on the start line at the Geelong World Cup Challenge. Mayor Harwood is a keen road rider and is a regular member of the local bunch rides in Geelong. In early January this year he joined the likes of Cadel Evans, Stuart O’Grady, Alexis Rhodes and Phil Ligget to complete the 120 kilometre Amy’s Ride.

Cr Harwood said he was looking forward to the event. "The Geelong World Cup Challenge is a great opportunity to soak up the ‘big race atmosphere’ of the World Cup and of course we get to cycle portions of the actual race circuit during the ride, so that will be a memorable experience,” he said.  “For me, the event also provides an opportunity to promote cycling not only as a fantastic means of staying fit and active but as a genuine transport alternative.

“With so much attention focused on greenhouse gases and climate change, not to mention rising fuel prices, cycling is being taken up by more and more people as an economical and environmentally responsible way to travel in busy urban environments,” Cr Harwood said.
