Australian Olympic Youth Festival (AYOF), Sydney, 14-18 January, 2009

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) will once again conduct the Australian Olympic Youth Festival (AYOF) at the Dunc Gray Velodrome, Sydney 14 to 18 January 2009.

Over 1800 athletes from over 20 countries will participate in the 22 sports on the Festival program.  Again the Australian cycling team will compete against strong international competition from Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand and Chinese Taipei. The USA are also considering sending a team to compete.

Australian Team: For the 2009 Festival the AOC have limited the Australian team to only 20 cyclists. This is a significant decrease from past Festivals. As a result of this and reflecting the AOC’s desire to increase the status of this event on the international stage, Cycling Australia’s National Track Selectors will determine the team to represent Australia at the 2009 AYOF. Selection in the

Australian team will be based on the following criteria:

• 2008 World Junior Track Championship representatives who are still eligible to compete as U19 in 2009 will be automatic selections
• Results from the 2008 Australian U19 & U17 Track Championships

BT Australia Get Behind CSV Junior Road Racing Development Camp

CSV Development Manager Luke Mason was delighted to announce today that Bike Technologies Australia (BT) is proudly supporting the upcoming CSV Junior Road Racing Development Camp.

BT have donated for use during the camp their BT-ATS Indoor Training Unit The unit will assist the participants in learning what various training techniques are available and it can be used with CSV's tuned wind resistance indoor training unit.

The advantage of the BT-ATS unit is that the athlete uses their own bicycle to perform the training and testing so they are using familiar equipment.  This will help the rider perform at their best effort as they do not have to acclimatise to unfamiliar equipment or set up positions.

Head of BT Global Sales Steven Sansonetti, himself a prolific medallist at State and National level, was keen to give  camp participants the edge.

"We at BT Australia are happy to assist the future stars of tomorrow learn and experience the latest training methods," Steven said.

The 5 day camp, to be held at Maldon in Central Victoria, will see participants subjected to a variety of physiological test including Vertical Jump, Max Heart Rate, Max Power, and Shuttle  Run (beep) test.

Places are still available for the 2008 Development Camp, to register contact Luke Mason at CSV.

Victorian Junior Road Aggregate points leaders and standings after Round 2

After the Shepparton Junior Tour, which was Round 2 of the 2008 CycleSport Victoria aggregate points state series for junior riders, there are many close tussles on the leader board.

The the M17 category, Calvin Watson (Carnegie Caulfield CC) maintained his lead over Brent Nelson (Blackburn CC), though Nelson closed the gap to just 65 points.  The big mover on the points table was Camperdown's Xavier Gstrein, who sits only 10 points behind Nelson in third following a strong showing in Shepparton.

In the W17 category, Shannon McCurley (Latrobe City CC) leads on 355 points, 40 points ahead of  Stephanie Hansen, (Carnegie Caulfield CC).  However unlike Round 1, Stephanie managed to take a stage win off her country opponent  gaining valuable points.  Samantha Verlin is in third on 250 points.

It is coming down to the wire in the M15 category, with only 5 points separating Jack Cummings (Carnegie Caulfield CC) on 300 points and Evan Hull (Ararat & District CC) on 295.  Hull took stage one of the tour, whilst Cummings steadied the ship by taking stage 2 and 3.  Portland's Lachlan Nolte is a further 65 points back in third.

And Lauretta Hanson (Macedon Ranges CC) took the lead in the W15 category after Round 1 standings leader Imogen Jelbart was forced to withdraw late last week due to an illness.  Hanson 270 points, leads Madeleine Cardillo on 250, with a stagnant Jelbart in third on 195 points.

The current leaders on the standings are as follows:

M17  Calvin Watson (Carnegie Caulfield CC) 265 points
W17  Shannon McCurley (Latrobe City CC) 355 points

Enthusiasm of juniors at Shepparton not dampened by rain

At the weekend, over 150 of Victoria's and Australian talented juniors contested the Shepparton Junior Tour, the second event in Victorian ‘08 Junior Road Team Selection & Aggregate Points Series.

Promoted by the Shepparton cycling club, the tour included a Road Race and Time Trial at Kialla on Saturday, with a Road Race at Dookie and afternoon criterium at Shepparton concluding the Tour.  Although rain forced the cancellation of the criterium stage, as it was deemed unsafe following heavy rains, the tour was a great success.

Shepparton Cycling Club would like to thank the Greater City of Shepparton Council, Victoria Police, VicRoads, Rural City of Benalla Council an the Scott People Foundation who donated show bags to participants.

Congratulations to the following riders who took out the GC in their respective categories;

M17 - Xavier Gstrein (Camperdown CC)
W17 - Amy Cure (TAS)
M15 - Evan Hull (
Ararat & District CC)
W15 - Antonia Abbisogni (
Bendigo & District CC)
JB13 - Joshua Liston (Ballarat & Sebastopol CC)
JG13 - Emma Bilston (Ballarat & Sebastopol CC)
JB11 - Dylan Bilston (Ballarat & Sebastopol CC)
JG11 - Ashleigh Hocking (Camperdown CC)

Report below from Keith Esson - Shepp News

Scudding showers brought a premature close to the weekend's Shepparton junior cycling tour.

Chief Commissaire, Brad Robins called off the final criterium stage deeming the circuit unsafe for racing.

"While not heavy, there was enough rain to make sections of the course unsafe because oil deposits, especially on corners, made the road very slippery and there posed a serious threat to the safety of riders," Robins said.

Three tour stages were completed before Sunday's untimely rain and road races at Kialla and Dookie plus Saturday's time trials produced a variety of winners creating a log jam at the top of the leader's boards in several age divisions.

A highlight of the event was the win by Tasmanian Amy Cure in the under 17 women's section. Cure is developing into a true all rounder with major successes on the track and now on the road. Towards the end of the last track season, Cure won the inaugural junior women's Austral Wheelrace before going to medal at the national championships in Sydney.

Cure held off last year's under 17 winner and Victorian champion Shannon McCurley from Latrobe City with another interstate visitor, Letitia Custance from Norwood in South Australia a close-up third.

Custance won the opening road race with Cure winning the time trial and Sunday's mountain stage at Dookie. McCurley was a model of consistency, finishing second to her interstate rivals in all three stages.

Consistency was the keynote to success for Xavier Gstrein in the under 17 men's A grade division. The Camperdown rider was second to Oliver Le Grice in the opening road stage and runner up to Brent Nelson (Blackburn) in the 15km time trial before breaking through to win the Dookie road stage to go to the top of the leader board.

The B grade division was also closely contested with Bendigo's Troy Hutchins victorious ahead of Jordan Sozzi (Shepparton) and Ciaran Conaughton (Ballarat-Sebastpool). Hutchins won the time trial, Sozzi the opening road stage and Jesse Rudolph (Ararat) took out the mountain state.

Two wins and a third were enough for Bendigo pocket dynamo Antonio Abbisogni successfully defend her under 15 title.

However, the eye-catching performance came from Madeline Cardillo. The Brunswick rider won the under 13 division of last year's tour but showed she was a force to be reckoned with in her new age group with second placings in all three stages.

Ararat state representative Evan Hull was a clear-cut winner of the A grade under 15 boys' section with three stage wins with Jack Cummings (Carnegie) runner up overall and second to Hull in each stage.

Winning all three stages put Nathan Clinnick (Macedon) well clear of his rivals in the B grade division.

Two stage wins ensured Joshua Liston (Ballarat-Sebastpool) a clear cut win in the under 13 boys while Dylan Bilston (Ballarat-Sebastpool) had a ding-dong battle with Jared Clinnick (Macedon) before taking out the under 11 boys' title.

Emma Bilston made it a family double by winning the under 13 girls' section and Ashleigh Hocking (Camperdown) won all three under 11 girls' stages.
