2014 , by CyclingVic
The Austral Wheelrace Carnival is generally regarded as Australia’s greatest and most prestigious track cycling event. On March 1st 2014 the tradition continues with the running of the 116th edition.
The Austral Carnival will mark the final event in the inaugural Victorian Track League and will feature an outstanding day of track cycling. In addition to the Austral Finals for Men, Women and Juniors the evening session will also feature the Victorian Scratch Race Championships.
Over the course of Austral history, many great cyclists have been successful including World Champions Gordon Johnson (1973), Steele Bishop (1982), Sid Patterson (1962, 1964) and Shane Perkins (2009). The Women's Austral has also developed an equally strong honour role in it's short history with Annette Edmondson (2012), Caitlin Ward (2013) and Helen Kelly (2000) taking honours.
The 2014 Austral promises to live up to this reputation with a quality field set to light up the world’s oldest, and Australia’s most famous, cycling race.
