Message to all members: The Hell Ride will destroy Beach Road cycling
CSV is prepared to act to foster safe and responsible cycling along Beach Road.
Behaviour by some riders in the Hell Ride will destroy Beach Road cycling. It is time to act now so that the image of cycling is not trashed again.
Cycle Sport Victoria (CSV), as the lead body in Victoria for cycle racing and participation, is greatly concerned about safety issues and the negative image for cycling that some riders who participate in the Hell Ride exhibit.
CSV is urging licensed riders to not participate in the Hell Ride.
Instead, we encourage you to organise your own rides with your mates or see what your club can provide.
Licensed riders belong to Cycling Australia affiliated cycling clubs and hold competition or recreational licences issued by Cycling Australia.
Bad and illegal riding impacts negatively on cycling’s relationship with government, police and the general public. There are important member benefits that will be badly impacted by another round of anti-Hell Ride/ anti-cyclist publicity.
We are currently lobbying hard for a weekend clearway along Beach Road and any adverse publicity will threaten this critical safety initiative. Also, obtaining race permits from the police is also greatly affected by the general community’s attitude to cyclists.
CSV is prepared to act to foster safe and responsible cycling. If we receive evidence that a licensed rider has committed a serious breach of the road rules then disciplinary proceedings may be brought against the individual, and if proven, is likely to lead to a lengthy period of licence suspension.
